Implications
The Privacy Act 1988 (Privacy Act) is an Australian law which regulates the handling of personal information about individuals (in this case students). This act ACT sets out standards, right and obligations for the handling, holding, use and accessing and correction of personal information (including sensitive information). Private Tertiary Education providers specifically named as being under this act.
Section 17 of the Privacy Act addresses Tax File Numbers - Tax File Numbers (TFN's) are to be restricted in access to only those individuals who who require direct direct access to them and and must be stored in an ENCRYPTED format.
